Reading through this, i read the firing a marine out a torpedo tube, this made me laugh hysterically, and while it'd probably be pointless, i think it would cause a great many to laugh seeing you firing your crew out at their BC shields, dang, I'm laughing just typing this.
Idea summary at bottom
I had an idea when reading through these posts, although I am not sure if could/would be linked to rep system, or if it would be entirely separate, but I think a difference (in weapons or playable units) in roles would be useful for a boarding commando, depending on what is wanted. Say, the unit could change between an anti infantry based weapon, if your main purpose is to harass the crew and cause in effective BC operations, or a demolitions kit which would be less ranged and not very effective on infantry, but you could booby-trap consoles, and destroy auto-turrets easier with. There could also be a spy/ghost type, something with say no or a weak weapon, who is semi transparent, or perhaps exhibits aspects like a changeling, who would try to stay undetected to provide tracking beacon like intell (visibility for other team), and/or "Unload" missiles.
So to sum it up, My Idea is having, say 3 available roles for a person boarding the enemy BC, an anti infantry unit to disrupt the other players, a saboteur who excels at destroying consoles/auto-turrets, (maybe small ships too) and a spy, capable of "Unloading" enemy missiles and providing tracking/BC visibility. (in response, perhaps there should be roles available such as defender, bomb-squad and detector to counter an infiltrator based on the infiltrator type {current unit setup would be defender})
(small thought, if saboteur can destroy small ships, it would be most likely launching them pilot-less, which could give the tractor beam a good use in retrieving enemy neutral/sabotaged ships or retrieving your own sabotaged small ships)

Re: Boarding Discussion
at the very least rep skins could at least have a different balanced shooting style each with maybe a different skill on each skin too?
this would make boarding much more interesting, and yeah it may seem to be a form of imba to have high rep players having an edge in boarding combat, but if that high rep player is on board your ship he certainly isnt leading his bc o.o

Re: Boarding Discussion
It's not a good idea to attach gameplay upgrades to rep because rep is spoofable, and it requires asynchronous balancing of skins since not everyone will have access to everything.
Having alternate BCs would be kickass though. Maybe have a dynamic ship layout, where if you pick a certain ship skin then the consoles move around, would be more defensible in some aspects in less defensible in others against boarders.

"Why are we still moving towards it?"
