Why was it standing still when a chomper was in danger?
stormahawk wrote:I am not quite sure how 11 range translates in distance in CC world but it should be enough to get out of shooting range for a few seconds. Also, keep in mind that wraiths do have EMP to keep abilities from being cast. A corvette will not get chomped if it is moving.
Maybe say the blink distance in chomperlengths so we have a better idea of what range you're thinking of.

Wraith EMP only lasts 8 seconds. While it would slow down the chomper, you've still got the 1200 hull to penetrate. A wraith can't kill that in 20 seconds.

Chompers can magnetic pull corvettes that are pointblanking for the chomp, regardless of corvette speed. It is never safe to attack a stationary chomper that knows what it's doing with a corvette, unless you're just trying to shoo it away.

Blink chomper doesn't seem Lore friendly to me

If chompers can blink, I want all my vessels equipped with that.

Uhm, blinking chompers? What next? Minelayers planting 10k dmg c4 explosives on enemy cruiser?

Chompers already are good the way they are. 11 distance short? Thats highest distance at which chomps can get harassed, if there was a teleport, it should be 0,5-1 range, to increase its mining ponential ( teleporting from one load to another when you"re very close. If you go chomping half map away - its your own fault, chompers are supposed to be vulnerable when chomping far from cruiser, if you're saying your chomper died under cruiser, then it was either slow reacting or was attacked by cruiser or recently popularized fully upped vette with ionic. If it was vette - dont worry, i witnessed how one of those raped 3/3 miners under my cruiser within 6 seconds, my tripples hardly scratched it on the way.

Not sure what you mean by lore friendly.

Ok, instead of 11 range how about 6 chomper lengths with a 20 second cooldown? Instead of using a blink animation, it could use the warp animation from the Mira Horner Mission in the HotS campaign (forgot the name), so technically it won't be blinking but warping a very short distance.

Regarding the 1200 hull, most captains don't max out the small ship upgrades until late game. The most I see my chompers at is at around 800 hp. If the game is well past 45 minutes, yeah small ships will probably be maxed but let's not forget that the other team will be close to maxed too. Wraiths that late in the game are usually less used than at the start. I have seen an upgraded destroyer one shot chompers before. My point is, you will never see a chomper with 1200 hp early in the game.

The magnetic pull even if upgraded is not that strong. I have tried to catch ships before with it but if they are moving away, magnetic pull moves them back slightly but nowhere near chomp chomp range.

I would like to emphasize once again that this blink ability would be very short range, have a lengthy cooldown, and will probably buy the pilot a couple of seconds. It will also allow the pilot to get to mineral fields a tiny bit faster (or relocate in the middle of one for better access) and maybe chomp a wraith pilot that is dumb enough to stand still next to a chomper.

6 chomper ranges is around 11 range, so that doesn't change the fact that giving that to chomper will make it rape wraiths and vettes, if captains do not max hull while enemy maxes offensive - then you are supposed to die, that's how it works, that's your captains fault.

Chomper is slow mining ship that is supposed to be used with a cruiser, i don't see a problem with making it back to cruiser if u mine next to it. If your hull and speed is level 0, while your enemies have wraith and vette with condenser, ionic and lvl 4+ speed ups hunting you, then dying is only natural, it wouldn't be nice if you escaped that.

put bluntly its just a horrible idea that will conceptually ruin the Chomper, its already a more effective means of collection than a miner, it does not need further upgrades. Hull is not a late game upgrade for small ships unless your deploying destroyers, a good captain will take care of his SS early if hes planning on a longer game.

First of all, I cant use stuff from the HotS campaign without making the map inaccessible to everyone without HotS.

Your reasoning behind this ability is that it would be:

* Short range
* Have a lengthy cooldown
* Allow the pilot to get to mineral fields a tiny bit faster
* Maybe chomp a wraith pilot that stands still next to a chomper.

Let's go through this one by one.

Short range: 6 chomper lengths is not short. Here's a picture for reference:
Image
That's basically as far as you can see.

Lengthy cooldown: 20 seconds is not a long cooldown. It's just slightly longer than the magnetic pull which is not a long cooldown.

Allow the pilot to get to the mineral fields a tiny bit faster: Sure, but that's what magnetic pull is for.

Maybe chomp a wraith: Problem is, you don't have to stand next to the wraith. If the wraith comes within sight, it's dead if you're good. What's stopping you from blinking and immediately chomping it? The Wraith wont have time to react.

To fix this, you could increase the cooldown and reduce the range drastically. Maybe to chomper lengths. The problem is that then I dont see the use for it. There's already the magnetic pull that brings stuff to you so an ability that brings you to stuff feels unnecessary.

A possible compromise that may help both sides:

Make the chomper blink target have a 'warp in' animation, much like the Protoss Warpgates? It makes a clear, relatively obvious warning that 'blink incoming, get out of the way,' but still provides some minor maneuverability to the Chomper.

However, other cons I see with this personally:
  • The main thing about chomper is it's SUPPOSED to be a bulky, slow, difficult ship to move around. It's vulnerable. Very, very vulnerable. Taking it out into the open to mine should still be a risk, and a blink like this really begins to negate that 'risk' by turning it into a ship that has superior maneuverability to most, despite being a bulky ass hull ship.
  • Lets me honest. It's not difficult to move to the center of an asteroid field. It's astoundingly simple, all you have to do is make some minor navigation and then start AoE pulling. I don't think it would be at all necessary to add this for 'the sake of asteroid navigation', as the primary thing it would be used for is most certainly not that.
  • Recently I've come to realize that a blink ability would be a bit awkward to use on this map due to the wrapping borders. All other abilities with some sense of additional maneuverability all work with the current map wraparound, but I think making a blink work with the borders would be... rather difficult.
Anyways, that's my 2cents.

Naw, i wouldn't give anyone a blink, and a wraith deserves a stealth abbility (which doesn't make it complete stealth), but drains mana over time and mades them glass-transparent
