Wait, I'm not sure what Whyte is suggesting. Having the camera at a different angle so it's from a first person view? Like you're in the cockpit?

Or do you mean so the Wraith always faces... let's say north and then the surroundings turn around it?

The second one is what i think he means, so your always facing north when piloting. thats going to make SS hard to control though.

Just realized the issue we'd have on turning with most ships with that previous camera idea - it only works decently for ships with at least a small turn rate I think, but I'll continue along as if all ships had at least a small turn rate.

What I meant to say is that your camera moves with your ship, though I'd prefer to talk more about something closer to a first person view now. It's a tentative suggestion though -- the static overhead camera view allows for people to retain a sort of 'strategy game' feel, where what I'm suggesting is a bit more of a 'camera behind the ship.' What I envisioned was a view running off of the small ship with a small (20 degrees or so?) angle of attack off of the ground level.

But that would significantly change the small ship feel - and I'm not sure that's necessarily appropriate. With the current GUI, it would also make utilizing the minimap a bit trickier, and following that you'd have to begin to ask why the controls aren't something closer to Starwars Assault where you end up flying where you point. So this is really why I'm bringing it up when you mention standalone with a new GUI - the current flying mechanics are good, and work, but if you're going to go about making something that isn't necessarily bound by Starcraft's design I think you may wish to consider altering the visual for small ship pilots. I personally feel as if something closer to the first person view might be more appropriate for a standalone in order to create a slightly more engaging environment for the pilot, something that is without doubt much more difficult to properly create on the SC2 engine.

In Short: If you're making a full standalone, it may not be a bad idea to look into the possibility of a First Person(ish) View. I think it worked quite well for Guns of Icarus, though the comparative ship size is probably far smaller. Hell, if you wanted to do a standalone you could even consider looking into the third dimension depending on how far you wanted to take it. But, if you're not looking to expand in that sort of way, then please disregard all of this. I'm simply speculating on how things could be expanded.

the only thing I hate about the FPS idea is how vulnerable we would be from behind/sides. it would require constant pinging to save miners from wraiths.

Depending on how the mini map was set up, it might not be quite that hard. We don't use it quite as consistently with SC2 since we have a large field of vision in a small ship normally, but if icons came up more clearly it would be a simpler matter of using it in order to detect incoming attacks. Especially if players possessed their team color on the mini map with player tags instead, or perhaps even vessel type.

It would definitely be a blind slot, and it would be overlooked in combat, but in a sense that demands more from the player in a stressed situation by dividing attention between two methods of sight. Again, I envisioned more just 'camera behind the ship.' I probably wouldn't even begin to suggest this without the mention of 'standalone.'

Another thing to keep in mind if your looking through "first person", cockpit view. How are miners going to take this? are you still going to be able to take a miner in the middle of an asteroid feild and pick the rocks to mine, instead of just eating everything so you can get what you want? I also forsee people becoming great backstabbers, as that will be the easiest way to kill people. I see many gameplay changes if we change the view of the camera.

think of starfleet command or star wars battlefront as more of a 3rd person view instead of a bird eye view

Decided to draw it this time. To much of a pain to ink it though.
