Tiers

At first, I did not like tiers. They have a confusing advancement system (for example, upgrading offensive tier 1 sets all next tier upgrades to 2), and have much contained in them. Having a lot in one upgrade reduces choices, and anyone who has not memorized the content of each tier will not know what was just upgraded when they see it on subtitle panel (chat message area).
However, the subtitle panel gets clustered with too much content, reducing visibility, so tiers do have an advantage of having less content there, and less time spent in upgrade console.

I would prefer an overhaul of the tier upgrades, if less, a re-balance since it seems to me that economy tiers are not as good as the utility and combat tiers, and offensive tier 3 is ALWAYS picked, even if you are running short in red and blue, people just have to have it.
I miss giving both wraiths cloaks and miners mining while moving, i would suggest making the tiers a numbers base only, (such as increase mining speed for miners, and extra damage for offensive ships) and separate the abilities out like cloak, mining while moving and spearhead boost.
(to creator, the spearhead boost tool-tip was removed from offensive tier 3, but still works anyways)
Tiered upgrades are needlessly advanced with many workings in them that can compliment or hinder each-other if you choose the wrong paths, and there is no way you can see which tier upgrade your team has upgraded either, unless you understand each tier upgrade well and know exactly how to tell if they work (Such as small ships having 50 sheilds to understand you have utility tier 2, or wraiths having cloak for offensive tier 2, but that takes time still, in either asking or launching a wraith to see if it has cloak or miner to see if it can mine while moving)

screw tier upgrades, the only good part is that they limit certain upgrades of getting ahead of other upgrades so easily, and give a better pace to upgrades.
(That wasn't a good explanation, maybe ill just Ditto Dinochicken

The idea behind the tier upgrades was mainly to make both teams "different", as both teams eventually ended up having everything in lategame and the only real different part was mostly the midgame.
Now both teams are different including the lategame.

I agree there should be a way to see which tier upgrades your team has.

There has been a recent rebalance iteration on the tiers in patch 4.5 and all economy tiers have been buffed significantly.
Offensive tier 3 has been nerfed and I doubt it's that powerful. With utility T3 you can easily buy a subjugator(also buffed) or a destroyer to support your BC in a battle, or you can get a cheap powerdock to negate Offensive T3's lower BC laser energy costs. Economy T3 can be great at having more income and more upgrades overall.
It's really just mostly the playstyle of some captains that always go for Offensive T3 (Looking at you Dread), not so much the balancing.

I don't think it's confusing and it's stated in the tooltip, that you can only pick one upgrade per tier level.

Well they supplement and set the tone for your team's strategy.
They have a lot in them in order to be significant choices and alter the advantages/disadvantages your team has over the other greatly and changes the way you fight against them. The small ship battle between one team with Utility T1 and one with Offensive T1 will simply be quite different (If the players know how to utilize the tier's bonuses well) than one with both having Offensive T1. Same with Econ T1 and Offensive T1, where one team will be more defensive and about keeping miners alive to maximize, while the other wants to push the wraith/corvette advantage and will attempt aggressive moves with their wraiths and corvettes to keep the edge in econ.

I agree with Degra on this. It's worth noting that I just added the picked tier to the Battlecruiser Status screen in the dev version so everyone on your team will be able to know which tiers you have at all times.

I don't like the current tier system, simply because they limit upgrade options - I would be OK with them as long as all the upgrades were available, even if they cost more at some point in order to do so.

In the future, I might enable the ability to purchase all tier upgrades after you've reached tier 3 in one. For now, it'll stay as it is.
