Dreadnought Armor Upgrade

Post by DumbMarine »

BC hull upgrades are boring. Here's a replacement upgrade that's more interesting:

Dreadnought Armor Plating: (max 5 upgrades, cost 100 yellow 100 blue)
  • Increases max ship health by 3000.
  • Increases hull armor by 3.
  • Increases ship size by 15%.
  • Reduces ship speed and turning by 10%.
  • Reduces shield damage reduction by 8%.
The tougher the ship, the bigger it is. The bigger it is, the slower it moves, and the more stretched the shields are. The hull armor means pain for the laser weapons but less pain for the kinetics.

Discuss.

I like this. I would probably never use it, personally (I dislike losing shields ;p) but it has a certain charm, and allows further differentiating between teams.

I am going to remove the incremental cost of the BC hull upgrade. What do you guys think of having this in addition to the BC hull upgrades? That way you can choose the slightly less effective upgrade but without the downsides.

i think it is an excellent idea, although the ship size should only increase by 5% in my opinion, and in order for this to work there would need to be more sheild upgrades and speed upgrades, wait is this the overall upgrade once you get all 5 upgrades or are they all just 1 upgrade each that would apply? if just 1 upgrade definitly need more sheild upgrades and some speed upgrades. i also dont think that the ship hull upgrade should be removed. i think it is fine although for the cost of it it should be upped to 750 because weps eat up hull so fast

If you add more shield and speed upgrades then the shield/upgrade penalty should be increased to maintain the counterplay.

EDIT: 5% size is too hard to notice. a 10% size increase might be a good compromise though.

the incremental cost would be good to ditch..

This is interesting, but id never use it myself. I do like the concept of having a different twist on hull upgrades if the hull is going to get this high in number however heals with a mine layer would begin to take a long time.

Maybe an upgrade featuring reinforced hull, to give more hull health and a damage resist with the same mechanic as hardened shielding. % reduced damage and maybe a cosmetic change to the armor of the ship along with it. this upgrade would be a good counter to a team focusing kinetic use or destroyers with the hull damage research as it would % decrease the amount of damage taken to the hull, but i dont see a reason to make the ship grow or to decrease its speeds.

Personally though id like to see boarding happen before any of this :o these awesome ideas will only hinder the speed at which boarding is released which will complete the map and open a new avenue of offense and strategy.
Games are only as Fun as Who you play them with

The reason the upgrade has a fairly steep downside attached (the reduced speed and the increased size) is because otherwise it becomes just another mandatory upgrade you get for the BC. 3000 hp per upgrade is (supposed to be) something that substantially affects combat.

I really like the idea of different hull upgrades, each of which is available in response to the other teams strategy.

Energy Shielding Hull - prevents Leech
Reflective Hull - decreases Laser damage
Para-Aramid Hull - decreases Kinetic damage

That said, Boarding is way more important.
