Regarding Vote Kick...

Post by WhyteDragon »

While I understand the vote-kick system, I also feel as if it acts as a method of cutting out new players who appear unsuitable for the game. Lets be honest -- a lot of more experienced players often lose patience with new people running off on their own to do silly things like shoot with Weapons, use the Construction Console, or even just sit around aimlessly. I'm not saying this isn't a necessary function -- there are times when someone is trying to troll and actually work against the team rather than with. However, those times are far fewer than when a player simply cannot wrap their head around everything, or refuses to listen.

I would like to suggest an alteration to the Vote-Kick system with that in mind - instead of removing the player from game, make it such that they lose control of their unit, have their camera locked onto it, and have it act as an AI until re-voted for. I would call this a 'Vote AI' system.

Reasoning:
  • By not outright kicking the player, you offer a chance to re-instate the person by 'Vote AI'ing for him again once they get a better understanding of the game's mechanics through observation rather than simply removing them.
  • By locking a player onto an AI's unit, they may not necessarily grasp the control but they may begin to grasp the basic concepts of the game. I.E. 'Mine Asteroids, Run from Enemy Wraiths, Dock to Heal, How to Refine' and so on.
  • This also create a way to deal with AFK Players without simply removing them from the game. It allows them to come back.
Obviously, this would require a decent amount of triggering. Again -- it is a suggestion, one that I put forth because I am seeking a method of creating an environment that may be a bit more kind to the new player. That is all.

me likey.

Except maybe allowing him to follow any of his own crew members.
not certain about that...

I like the original idea though. maybe some tweaks but overall I like it...

Something like this might be good too. I don't see it being abused since this is a heavy communications games to begin with, but it does put a lot of extra effort into the setup.

mhm, just following his own AI might be enough, but that would mean no chance to learn navigation/power/wraith/vette or even minelayer (if people still uses them)

I think you're overestimating new player's patience. If their screen gets locked indefinitely(Sure, you can unlock it, but they dont know how long until you do that), they will become frustrated and leave the game. If they have the patience to stay, they probably wouldn't be in this mess at all.

I think the amount of people with enough patience to not leave until you unlock the camera but who are still stupid enough to require you to lock the camera is a very small amount.
Never ignore coincidence. Unless, of course, you’re busy. In which case, always ignore coincidence.

The issue I'm observing is not a new player's patience to stay, but an experienced player's patience in a new player. Again -- I've seen a lot of people kick because people are incapable of understanding how to launch, launch the wrong thing, or can't make their way around the BC immediately.

Again, if it isn't too much of an issue to set up I would argue that even if this is towards a more selective set of people, it's still a vastly superior alternative to immediately removing them from the game. Some people have the patience, but not the adaptability required to get started in this game. If it's a complex mechanic that's difficult to set up, then I would drop the idea.

This. Why not?

You already have the vote kick mechanism and the player becoming a drone mechanism, so it should not be too difficult to make the reverse process by assigning a player the drone back again!?!
