Continous increase/lower Power console buttons

Post by Degra »

Idea:
  • Pressing e.g. "Raise Shield" once would have the effect of automatically raising shields by 5 gw per second until you press "(Stop) Raising Shield" again.
Goal:
  • Making communication without TeamSpeak easier for the captain
  • Avoid forcing the captain into the dilemma of whether tell someone to go to Nav/weapons/upgrades and stop raising shields to type it, or keep raising shields
  • Easier organization and delegation of work for the captain in emergency situation, because chat box can't be opened while handling power console
  • Less clicking involved in using the power console, meaning more focus can be paid on the surroundings

Discuss.

as i have stated in skype, here is what i see of implementing this mechanic

The benifits of simply being able to type a small message does not outweigh the disadvantages of being less new player freindly then ever before and innacuracy
Oh its not orders I'm giving, but rather... "aggressive suggestions".

I for one, am for it.

It allows better team communication which is key in CC. We shouldn't have to rely on a third party program for communication (Team speak)
New players aren't on TS.

TL;DR : Aye.

I feel like the controls for this would be clunky. You're only considering the 5gw case. What happens if you want more, you press it several times to get it to the periodic tick you want and then to cancel you have to press it down that many times? I feel like that would be very annoying.
Never ignore coincidence. Unless, of course, you’re busy. In which case, always ignore coincidence.

As already explained in the Skype chat, there's a slight misunderstanding.
The first time you press "W", the shields get raised automatically by 5 gw/sec, until you decide to press "W" again to stop the automatic raising of the shields.
So you could just wait 50 seconds til you press "W" the second time, which would result in 50*5 gw = 250 additional shields, or 50 clicks in the current system.

The advantage of my suggestion is that you can TYPE on the power console WHILE shields are being raised.

well, it would work like this, you press the button once for sheilds to increase by 5....10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40 and then hit that button again to stop it at say....50 or something like that. that way in between you can type what you want because you arent having to hold that button down, because its automaticly decreasing/increasing until you press that button once to stop it.

I don't think beto uses this site.. but he would request some power buttons that would set the power for "attack" or "run away" or "fight" (shields but no engine) so that he can click on it and then type stuff and organize his team

After further iterating on the idea I think it would suffice if shields (maybe engines too) had a continous increase button (extra button), while leaving the rest of the power console unchanged.
